Shipping and the volume (CBM)

Usually we collect customers’ cargoes and parcels from various cities in China and ship them from Shanghai, Guangzhou , Yiwu or Ningbo at competitive rates to most destinations.

Shipping by Sea

The shipping costs of your products by sea usually depend on the amount of cubic meters (CBM or the volume) the goods occupy in the container espcially if it’s LCL (less than a container load). When shipping by sea, the costs are estimated according to the space the goods  take up on the ship’s container in term of CBM .Sometimes the weight may count your LCL cargoes are too heavy and exceed 1000kg.

How to calculate the CBMs
Measure the length* width and height of the shipment in meters by using a tape measure or a long ruler and a calculator.

Cubic meters (CBM) = (L X W X H) in meters = CBM

A whole container for your goods alone either a 20 ft or a 40 ft container will be cheaper than a shared container. The shipping costs also vary depending on the destination the goods are heading to as well as the shipping line used to that destination.

Shipping by Air

In most cases, the cost for Air freight are decided by the weight that the parcel or cargo weigh. Sometimes both weight and volume can be combined to decide the cost for air freight. This is the volumetric (or dimensional) weight. The volumetric weight of a shipment is a calculation that reflects the density of a package. A less dense item generally occupies more volume of space, in comparison to its actual weight. Many companies such as cargo airlines, DHL, UPS, FedEx, TNT and others usually use volumetric weight if the volume of the cargo is not not proportional to its weight.

How to calculate the Volumetric Weight
Measure the length* width and height of the consignment/package in centimeters.
Calculate the volume and divide it by 5,000 to get the dimensional/volumetric weight in kilograms.
(Note: Round off fractions to the next whole number)

Volumetric weight factor = (L X W X H) in cms/5000 = Kilograms

In most cases, once your goods have arrived at the respective destination, you will have to consult a shipping agent (a clearing and forwarding company) for port clearance so as to get your goods out at the port and pay port charges and tax. If you are not familiar with that, don’t crack your head, TEW can give you assistance with all that.
